Does your dog ever get the zoomies?
Yeah. It's pretty common. If your curious about zoomies, you can read about them from the American Kennel Association.
But zoomies aren't what you're here for.
Your dog wants to thrive, to grow, and to be itself. That should involve healthy movement, healthy eating patterns, and consistent activity for its breed. And what better means of giving your special furry friend what it desires than to take them for an adventure around town?
Here is our list of five great, pet-friendly options for going on the town in and around Salisbury, Maryland. The third one might just surprise you.
By the way, we reached out to our friend Kailey over at Kailey Walks Dogs, a private dog walker in Salisbury, who shared her personal suggestions for this list. Check them out below!
1. Pempteron Historical Park (Kailey's pick)
According to the Wicomico County Parks and Recreation department, "Pemberton Historical Park is a gorgeous 262 acre expanse of nature and wildlife, located just minutes from Route 50 along Pemberton Drive. Created in the 1980s, the park surrounds Pemberton Hall, a plantation home built in 1741, which is rich in Eastern Shore history. The park's mission is to provide a setting that blends together history and nature. Amenities include a trail system, outdoor amphitheater, fresh water ponds with catch-and-release fishing, public restrooms and several picnic areas." Within the park, there are several miles of trails for hiking and walking, perfect for taking your little furry friend (or friends!) on a stroll.
Our personal favorite spot is a little island just off the land, connected by foot bridge, great for teaching little ones to fish! Water flows through the river just off the island, making it a little oasis of peace amidst the current. Go out and enjoy this property as soon as you can!
2. WinterPlace Park and Equestrian Center
According to Wicomico County Parks and Rec, "WinterPlace Park is located just off Route 50, across from the Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The large facility features softball fields, volleyball courts, tennis/pickleball courts, multi-use fields, trails, as well as picnic and pavilion amenities. All fields are lit." Another source, Delmarva Trails and Waterways, states that there is "free entry," and "there is a two mile loop trail in the woods to the east of the ball fields. Connector trails cross the loop giving hikers the option to complete shorter loops."
WinterPlace park is near and dear to our hearts. Many in Salisbury have enjoyed the shows, carnivals, festivities, and horse training that is hosted throughout the year by the different groups utilizing the grounds. Your puppies will enjoy the wide trails and friendly neighbors passing on their way for some exercise in the great outdoors!
3. Leonards Mill Park
According to Wicomico County Parks and Req, "The park is divided by a small creek leading to Leonard Pond. Two bridges, ideal for fishing, connect the upper and lower sides of the park. On the upper side, there is a boat ramp with access to Leonard Pond, a large pavilion with a grill and picnic tables, a horseshoe pit and a 30,000+ sq. ft. dog park. On the lower side, there is a large playground area, picnic tables and a walking trail."
We are big fans of the dog park in Leonards Mill; it is actively used, maintained, and houses benches and picnic tables, covered and uncovered. What's more, the dog park provides water fountains and dog-poop bags for easy cleanup after your pets.
Overall, this location is is a great place for family gatherings (the pavilion and grill), for time with kids (the playground), for being with friends (kayaking and boat ramp), and for your dogs (the dog park). Check out this great park this weekend!
4. Schumaker Park (Kailey's Pick)
Wicomico County Parks and Rec states "Schumaker Park is a beautiful, 11 acre wooded area nestled along the waterline of Schumaker Pond.
The park is somehow spacious and intimate at the same time, making it perfect large gatherings and quiet, casual outings. Family reunions or corporate picnics, for instance, can be easily accommodated in the large pavilion which sits up on the hill overlooking the water. An oversized grill is situated right next to the pavilion, in its own shelter, making it easy to cook for big groups."
The county also notes a dock for fishing, disc-golf courses, and seating. Kailey with Kailey Walks Dogs notes the park as a solid choice for taking your pets for a stroll or relaxing alongside them. Give it a visit soon!
5. Salisbury City Park (Kailey's Pick)
With perhaps the most extensive litany of items to do, Salisbury City Park provides great value for families looking to share outdoor time with their furry friends. Explore OC states that "The Salisbury City Park is located in the heart of the city on each side of the east prong of the Wicomico River." It goes on to say that "In the middle of the park is the Salisbury Zoo and just east, Ben’s Red Swings, a community playground. The park is also home to the Salisbury Dog Park, Salisbury Skate Park, and many mountain bike trails. In the Winter, the parks hills are popular with sledding children." In our experience, it is quite the adventure to hit the trails with a pet, romping over the thick roots and winding paths to get your exercise in!
While, for fairly obvious reasons, pets are not allowed in zoo as seen on the Zoo's website, the Zoo is both free and welcoming, attached to the property and perfect for visiting with friends and family. What's more, the dog park in the larger park is well-kept, is separated by large and small dogs, and includes dog-waste bags and trashcans for waste disposal.
BONUS. Your own backyard.
Let's not get caught up and forget the value of your own backyard. While there is great fun to be had in packing in the car and going for an adventure on the town, be sure to utilize blessing of your yard as well. Your yard should be the most welcoming place of all for your pet, a reservoir of peace, playtime, and relaxation as it spends its time with its favorite person, you!
